Kaleidoscope

Photography wise, nothing much happened last week. I went with a colleague to the start of De Brabantse Pijl, a cycling race. Since I am a complete novice in the professional cycling world, I couldn’t recognize any of the players. So I just took some pictures of the people there.

Saturday I went to the in-laws avant-le-mariage. They’re working on a new project and needed a couple of portraits. Since this session took place in their basement under tungsten lighting, I wasn’t very optimistic at first. But a large scroll of white paper provided a great (even) background and a massive amount of lights allowed me to use fairly small apertures. A slower shutter speed made it possible to get even light (tungsten light works with pulses, so the shutter speed must be long enough for such a cycle to complete) and adjusting the white balance turned out to be easy as well. I’m sure they will appreciate the results!

In the evening, I went to the NonStop party. It’s organized by Chiro Overpelt-Centrum, of which I used to be an active member for as long as I can remember. Seeing so many of my friends again was absolutely fabulous. Sunday morning I spent at my parents’ place and in the afternoon I headed to Kessel-Lo. There we got together with Karolien’s sister, her brother-in-law and their daughter.

Family matters

This weekend it was time for visitations. On Friday we went to Kim and Tim, two friends of mine. In the US we bought Coke that was vanilla flavored, Kim’s favorite. We had to drop it off and stayed for the rest of the evening. On Saturday I went by my grandparents, had lunch at Karolien’s parents, went to see Karolien’s grandparents and I finished the day walking with Karolien’s parents. On Sunday there was brunch at the Kompenhof (again) with my parents. Next week, there’s more time to go see some more friends.

Photography-wise, I’m trying to use my 24mm lens more often. Practicing is really important, as converging lines become more apparent on a wide angle. I don’t think I’ve succeeded yet, so more training is needed.

Closure (trip-wise)

Yesterday I had dinner with one of the readers of my blog. Now, before you hit yourself in the head and go check the previous posts to see how you could have possibly missed that there was a competition with such a fabulous prize, it was with a friend I already knew. And while “dinner” may sound fancy, it was just a plate in student restaurant Alma 1.

Anyway, she told me she visited the blog regularly, but said I needed some blog-closure on this 3 month trip I took. I think she’s right, yet I don’t have that many more finished pictures to share after Monterey and Santa Barbara. Therefore it seemed ok to me to use a picture of what I thought was one of the most magical places I visited: Tunnel View at Yosemite park. I hope the picture gives some kind of closure as it showcases the great nature and us being back together.

Karolien and I returned by separate planes on Thursday. I had plenty of catching up to do with the different families. So the day after, we got together with the family of Karolien’s sister and we walked in Provinciaal Domein Kessel-Lo again. I was happy that the little J. still knew (and loved) me. In the weekend we went to Oostende and got together with my family. As it turns out, little has changed there too.

Santa Barbara – Monterey

Today, Karolien and I started our trip to Monterey in Santa Barbara. The weather was amazing! A full blue sky and high temperatures (even in Celcius units) accompanied us in the old city center. When leaving for Monterey in the afternoon, things started to change. At our first stop – around Morro Rock – a dense fog made its way into the air, quickly surrounding us. The few leaflets Karolien printed, said that the road CA 1 along the coastline is one of the nicest coastal roads and we feared not to see any of it. And indeed, the first few hours, we mostly saw fog and clouds. Yet the sights were very dreamy and we were happy witnesses to it. Hoping for some color, however, I was anxious to see if we would see the sun set today. And as you can see in the final picture included below, I was not disappointed.

All things move toward their end

After visiting Antelope Canyon, our trip took us to the Grand Canyon. Due to the icy weather, the number of possible hikes were limited and  the Kaibab trail was recommended the most. Therefore we ended up doing it. It wasn’t very long, but because of the thin and cold air, it became rather physical. Well, to be honest, it is also my fault a bit. The guide said that for every time unit you walk down in the Canyon, you had to triple it when walking up. I wanted to see if I could do it in just twice the time, but ended up going up in less time than going down.

The day after, we visited the Grand Canyon from a helicopter. Papillion was the cheapest company to offer such tours, so we went with them. You have to give a time window when you will go into the air and we were supposed to take off any time between 11 and 12. When driving down to the airport, it began to snow and this resulted in a one hour delay of our departure. Mistakes made by the crew made us wait another hour (and almost one more), but then we took off. A spectacular view was the result. Unfortunately pictures has to be taken through a plastic, scratched and dirty window, so these pictures need some heavy editing. Nonetheless, I have one included below. Later that day we drove down past Lake Havasu to Eherberg, in close proximity of Joshua Tree.

Naturally, we visited Joshua Tree the next day. It was a quick visit on our route to Los Angeles, where we arrived in the late afternoon – just early enough to explore it by foot. Yesterday we went to its beaches, Venice beach and Santa Monica beach. Quite a variety in characters: tarot card readers, rollerskating people, bodybuilders and medicinal marijuana doctors were screaming for attention.

Today we’ll visit Santa Barbara and drive up the coast line to Monterrey. This will be our last stop before San Francisco, where will will complete our tour on Wednesday.

Canyonlands – Antelope Canyon

Yesterday we visited icy Bryce again. There was only one route accessible without specialized equipment  and it was quite dangerous at times (as you can see below). Yet we made it out there alive and had a great time hiking.

Today we went to Antelope Canyon, but before elaborating on that, I have a small detour to make. Usually, the stress level in photography is ranked as follows: 1. war photography; 2. wedding/sport/event photography; and 3. landscape photography. This is because war is typically a more stressy environment to work in than a wedding or a football match and certainly more so than photographing a landscape. I do want to point out, however, that landscape can be stressy as well. In Antelope Canyon, we took the non-photographer route (it saved a couple of bucks and you’re allowed to take pictures as well), yet we had to compete with (fellow) amateurs in our group and with professionals who took the other route and got preferential treatment. Since a tripod and long exposure time are of the essence, my heart rate was rather high and the competition fierce.

Antelope Canyon has a ray of light shining through it for a very brief amount of time. I was set up to photograph it and a minute before the light was at its best, the photographer group arrived and installed themselves in front of me. So I was unable to capture the classic image. I do believe some pictures came out quite alright though, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Temperature roller coaster

The last post ended with Karolien and me going to Mariposa Grove on Wednesday. A day later we went from those snowy plains to the salty plains in Death Valley. It sure was beautiful there, but the tunnel view at Yosemite stole my heart. Death Valley wasn’t as hot as it could be, so we were able to go for short walks and stay a bit longer. In the afternoon we headed for Las Vegas. Still tired from the heat in Death Valley and the driving, I must confess we weren’t into it the first evening. I even recall myself saying: “seeing this place makes me loathe mankind”.  People spitting on the street in front of you in a disgusting way and the overload of (extremely) drunk spring breakers may have been at the root of this. The day after we took it more slowly and got to appreciate Sin City a bit more. After Las Vegas we headed for Zion. We arrived on Friday evening and went to visit this national park on Saturday. It sure is beautiful! We did some hikes and on Sunday we went horseback riding. Due to my complete inexperience, I was assigned a ‘mean’ horse, named Butter Cup. Later that day we went to Bryce, but instead of a red park, it was white, completely covered in a man’s height of snow. A bummer.

Later today we’ll be heading to Page and hopefully we leave the snow behind!

Beautiful things

Every evening Karolien and I have to search for a motel for the next one and plan the day that proceeds it. Therefore there is little time to go online and describe our days to my readers. I do take pictures, however. And some of them can be seen below. We started our trip on Sunday in San Francisco. Monday I showed her around in Palo Alto and we headed for Yosemite in the evening. We ended up in Jamestown to spend the night.  Tuesday we  did Yosemite’s highlights around the Valley and today we went to Mariposa Grove (Yosemite) and drove down to Ridgecrest.

You can never hold back spring

As you can see in the pictures below, spring is in the air. This evidently means that the Winter Quarter at Stanford has come to its end and that it’s time for me to go home. Well, to go tour the West Coast with Karolien first. I’m very grateful to have been given the possibility to come here and benefit from a great teacher and great fellow students.

This evening C., G. and I go out for dinner and the last couple of drinks and tomorrow is laundry, cleaning and errands day. So unless anything surprisingly fun occurs, I will write my next blog post while being on the road with Karolien. Exciting!

Time Flies When You’re Having Fun

I had a great time the past few days, cruising around the Bay Area with my dad. Since he’s in the computer business, he was very keen on visiting all these Silicon Valley companies. Most of them were closed, but the Computer History Museum was open and Intel even had its own little museum. Seeing how my dad originally studied to develop computer chips, this seemed to be the highlight of the trip for him and – since he was an excellent and passionate tour guide there – for me too.

Naturewise we also headed towards Pomponio State Beach (do not type in ‘shortest route’ in your GPS, the 280 is MUCH quicker and still nice), the Crystal Springs Reservoir, Muir Woods and some Baylands parks. The nicest place is probably a vista point north of the Golden Gate Bridge that we visited at night (see the pictures).

He left Thursday morning and next Saturday (that’s in 8 days) Karolien is coming over. So I only have one more week here. Time flies when you’re having fun. QED
